In fact, much of NSW has far more mild, wet and cloudy summer days than all of the other states, perhaps with the exception of Tasmania. And not to mention the perpetual wind!!!

I don't why this has happened because, when I was a kid growing up in Sydney, you could always count on weeks of long, hot sunny days throughout Dec-Feb. I now live on the Central Coast, about an hour north of Sydney and I spend most of the year wearing long pants and jumpers. I am so sick of it, I am seriously looking at moving to a state with a warmer, sunnier climate asap. I have just received an advance copy of the thesis and accompanying published papers (4) so I imagine this is a compliation thesis. I still do not know what to expect next month. The thesis is small (welcome!) than many UK PhDs I have examined and supervised. I imagine much of the groundwork has been defended in seminars. I hope it is OK to ask for more detail on theoretical background and premises employed? It looks quite different from PhD theses I have examined in the UK. I assume the previous seminar presentations have covered ground that would be included in a UK PhD. I also have the four accompanying published papers so I guess this is a compilation thesis. I can say that Sydney weather is positively exaggerated in terms of sunshine and rainfall. You can have cold days in the middle of the summer and the amount of rain and wet days is high all year round.

The legend about Sydney enjoying a Mediterranean climate is unreal. Although there are several warm days anytime of the year and temperatures do not fall below zero in the inner suburbs.

News about droughts and floods are sometimes generalised for all the country but it is necessary to know how big is Australia. And Sydney is just a tiny part of a vast country.FDnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838930374747867327.post-26124378674573924432011-06-27T01:34:32.338+10:002011-06-27T01:34:32.338+10:00For major Australian cities, if you like sunshine,...For major Australian cities, if you like sunshine, Perth is the place to be in summer, with week after week of clear sunny weather. There are occasionally periods of wet weather lasting 2 weeks but generally you should expect on average 20 sunny or mostly sunny days per month. There are also more clear days in winter than in summer, on average.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology website, Sydney's active weather station for measuring sunshine is at Sydney Airport. This site records an average of over 2,600 hours of sunshine per year. This is considerably more than London's 1,400 hours per year but notably less than desert areas such as Las Vegas which receive well over 3,000 hours per year. Also, contrary to common beliefs, Sydney is one of the wettest major cities in the world, yet it lays on one of the driest continents.

In addition to the ocean and beaches to the east, the city is surrounded by large green belts (National Parks) to the north, west and south. You don't get this much greenery without decent amounts of rain.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838930374747867327.post-38068048485542014792011-05-27T00:26:08.334+10:002011-05-27T00:26:08.334+10:00Yea, this is a great film....Yea, this is a great film....bristol plastererhttp://www.sptplastering.co.uknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838930374747867327.post-42029991693277107352010-11-30T12:37:52.073+11:002010-11-30T12:37:52.073+11:00Im from Western Australia and have spent a fair bi...Im from Western Australia and have spent a fair bit of time in Sydney this year, I always thought that Sydney weather was good but I gotta say that the weather there is a real pain - if Melbourne has four seasons in one day then Sydney seems to have about six.
Drizzly rain followed by bursts of sunlight then more rain, then wind, possible thunderstorm etc etc
Compared to many other places in the world Sydney's weather is great but in comparison to say Perth's sunshine it just doesnt rate.
It is also very windy on the coast especially around Manly, this of course is not uncommon with many coastal areas particularly in Western Australia but again I had the impression that Sydney weather wasn't like that.
Still its a great city overall and the harbour is absolutely killer, a top place to visit or live if you like plenty going on.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838930374747867327.post-25895409539008780722010-11-02T13:02:45.614+11:002010-11-02T13:02:45.614+11:00I have just stumbled across your blog. A Senior Lecturer would typically be somewhere between 4 and 16 years past their PhD [that is, someone on a fast-but-not-superhuman track would get to SL about 4 yrs after their PhD, and move beyond it about 8 years after PhD, while someone on a slow-and-steady track might take 8 years to reach SL, and be ready for the next step after 8 more].

The expectation for appointment at Senior Lecturer typically is that one already clearly established their success in an independent research agenda (a coherent body of work that one initiated, done with students and/or a variety of colleagues) and similarly, that one has clearly established an independent record as a teacher (including making some innovations in class content or delivery, developing material, supervising teaching assistants, etc).

Note also that in Australia (unlike the US) there is no notion of up-or-out; that is, tenure is not coupled to seniority. One can have a tenured appointment at any level, and also a fixed-term appointment can be at any level. This ad is for a tenure-track appointment; provided the person achieves reasonably on the conditions set down when they are hired, they would be confirmed after 3 years, and thereafter they could only lose their job through a process demonstrating poor performance, or through budget shortfall in the organization. Confirmation of tenure does not mean one gets a promotion, nor does appointment at Senior Lecturer in any way reduce the tenure period.Alan Feketenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838930374747867327.post-31780932992926533602010-05-13T17:23:22.267+10:002010-05-13T17:23:22.267+10:00Welcome back Joachim.Welcome back Joachim.Mohammadnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5838930374747867327.post-52629844847165383842010-02-16T04:06:06.812+11:002010-02-16T04:06:06.812+11:00You may find the list here.
